Sonangol is a leading oil and gas company in the African continent and as such has been increasing its commitments towards sustainability, whilst already being prominent in providing employment and economic opportunities to its citizens and local communities.
The company has contracted Climate Horizons, in collaboration with SHELTER Srl, since 2023 to support them in strengthening their sustainability and ESG performance and related reporting towards its net-zero journey and just transition.
The main outputs of these three years have been the yearly Sustainability Reports, compiled through extensive ESG data collection and engagement with all relevant internal and external stakeholders and following international best practices and standards. Sonangol has also been supported in the development of key documents, including Energy Transition Strategies, ESG and Sustainability Strategies, Climate Risk Assessments and related communications with Board members and funders.
The project has just completed its third year, covering 2024.

2023 - 2024
Commissioned by Laudes Foundation, Wallace Global Fund, and Ford Foundation, the project mapped organisations and efforts focused on achieving just transitions across industries. Conducted between August and December 2023, the research identified over 600 initiatives in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, spanning five major sectors: built environment, fashion, finance and capital markets, and extractives (including fossil fuels).
The mapping is intended as a tool, a starting point for organisations, actors and initiatives to find strategy aligned initiatives to drive faster, more ambitious climate action, address structural inequalities, and ensure a truly just transition.
A second phase was carried out in 2024, developing a series of innovative communication materials and workshops with key stakeholders within industries, philanthropies and academia, including a panel at Bilbao Impact Week 2024 and an animated video.

2024
Climate Horizons provided technical advisory services and oversaw the development of critical documentation to support FY2024 reporting efforts. The work included guiding the Scope 3 emissions reporting and target-setting process in alignment with the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) guidelines, ensuring consistency with industry best practices. Additionally, Climate Horizons contributed to the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy and a Climate Change and Water Report, addressing key environmental challenges and supporting the organisation’s sustainability objectives.

2025
Climate Horizons was contracted by a health infrastructure developer to understand the feasibility of utilising carbon credits to finance health infrastructure maintenance in several countries in Africa. Infrastructure financing in a context of low creditworthiness and limited fiscal space is complex enough. Maintenance of such infrastructure poses additional challenges that may require innovative solutions. The team undertook a first of a kind analysis of a pilot country’s potential to use the carbon credit market for this purpose, considering whether carbon credits are a relevant financing solution and the level of readiness of the country. The report identified opportunities and proposed a way forward for the client to support the government in creating an ecosystem conducive to fostering innovative finance options.
